Women are a common theme in cemetaries. The tradition of engraving them as mourners dates to classical Greek stelae. Women are often seen grieving in Christian art - especially as the Virgin Mary praying for the dead or lamenting for Jesus. Women in cemetaries are often depicted holding an urn, a cross, a book, or an anchor.
